Leaf anatomy of five species of Solanum subg. Leptostemonum (Dunal) Bitter and its taxonomic significance.

Solanum subg. Lepstostemonum (Solanaceae) comprises about 570 species with a wide distribution, mainly in the Neotropics, having Brazil as one of the centers of diversity and endemism. The subgenus, also called “spiny solanums”, is characterized by the presence of rotate or stellate corollas, yellow anthers with poricidal dehiscence, prickles on the branches and leaves, and stellate trichomes. This work was performed with the objective to analyze the taxonomic importance of leaf anatomy in five Brazilian species of Solanum subg. Leptostemonum (S. depauperatum Dunal, S. jussiaei Dunal, S. paraibanum Agra, S. rupincola Sendtn., and S. schizandrum Sendtn.), which have several characters in common: liana habit , recurved prickles on stems and leaves, sessile stellate trichomes on the leaves adaxial surface, fruits with 3.0 to 3.5 cm in diameter, and hairy epicarps. The study was performed according to techniques for plant anatomy, supported by light and scanning electronic microscopy. As results, all species showed sinuous anticlinal cell walls on both surfaces, except for S. jussiaei only on the abaxial, and straight to curve walls on the adaxial surface. The leaves showed hypoestomatic pattern of stomata distribution in all species. The anisocytic type was observed in all species; the type anomotetracytic was in S. depauperatum, S, jussiaei, and S. schizandrum, anomocytic type was observed in S. depauperatum and S. schizandrum; and the brachyparacitic type only in S. jussiaei. Trichomes stellate, sessile or stalked, with long or reduced midpoint were observed in all species. All species showed dorsiventral mesophyll with a single palisade, and 3-5-layers of spongy parenchyma, midrib biconvex with an arch-shaped central vascular bundle, with bicolateral vascular system. The petiole is ovate in S. depauperatum, circular in S. jussiaei, semicircular in S. schizandrum, and they have an arch-shaped central vascular bundle. The petioles of S. paraibanum and S. rupincola are semicircular with lateral projections, and U-shaped central vascular bundle, and two lateral accessory bundles, this pattern is also present in S. schizandrum. The set of characters was significant to differentiate the studied species, among which are evident: the petioles shape in all species, the presence of anomocytic stomata in S. depauperatum; the straight to curved anticlinal cell walls on the adaxial surface, and the brachyparacitic stomata in S. jussiaei; the different stellate trichomes in all species; and the number of vascular bundles of the petiole, which are significant for separation of this species and contribute to their taxonomy.
