An annotated chromosome-scale Pedicularis genome assembly enables comparative transcriptomic investigations of floral diversity in the Hengduan Mountains. The Hengduan Mountains of China is a biodiversity hotspot that harbors the greatest concentration of temperate plant diversity in the world. Among the most diverse plant lineages in this region, few genomic resources are available, which has limited our ability to elucidate the evolutionary processes underlying their rapid radiation. The genus Pedicularis stands out for its exceptional diversity of floral traits displayed across more than 300 endemic species. In this study, we assembled a chromosome-level assembly of P. cranolopha using a combination of long-reads, short-reads, and Hi-C sequencing data. Furthermore, we assembled the transcriptomes of both leaves and flowers of 25 Pedicularis species, representing a broad range of floral and leaf forms. We conducted a comparative transcriptomic analysis, a phylotranscriptomic analysis, and an ancestral gene expression state reconstruction to investigate the underlying gene expression differences among different types of morphologies. Our study will shed new light on the floral morphological evolution of Pedicularis in the Hengduan Mountains, a hotspot of plant diversity. Log in to add this item to your schedule
