Phylogenetic investigation of Bacopa (Plantaginaceae) using molecular and morphological data.

The genus Bacopa (Plantaginaceae) includes species with diverse growth forms and some species that are fully aquatic (e.g., B. reflexa, B. verticillata). Bacopa comprises about 60 species that grow mainly in North and South America but with some species growing in Africa or being more widespread (e.g., the cosmopolitan B. monnieri). Taxonomic sections, established using leaf, inflorescence, and flower characters, have yet to be evaluated in a phylogenetic context.We performed DNA sequencing on herbarium specimens that were collected from the Americas and Africa, targeting the nuclear ITS region and the plastid ndhF gene. Molecular data supported the monophyly of sections Bacopa, Bramia, and Herpestis, but sections Chaetodiscus and Mella were not monophyletic. Monophyletic sections can be achieved by transferring three species (B. arenaria, B. monnierioides, B. occultans) from Mella to section Chaetodiscus, by expanding section Bacopa (formerly including only the type species B. aquatica) to include section Mella, and by erecting a section to contain the distinctive species B. scabra. The phylogenetic position of one individual of Conobea scoparioides, which was resolved within the genus Bacopa, may require taxonomic changes at the genus level.
