Seed morphology of nine Andean species of Cayambe-Coca National Park in Ecuador (Asteraceae and Caprifoliaceae).

Ecuador has an exceptional plants biodiversity with many applications for humans. Their study is important because basic features of Andean seed biology and germination for many species are still unknown and these species are critical for high altitude Andean ecosystems rehabilitation. By analyzing important aspects of seed biology, we will contribute with important reforestation and restauration programs but also establish the foundation for commercial enterprises such as plant nurseries, botanical gardens, and their ex-situ culture for commercial purposes.

This poster summarizes preliminary morphology results of seeds belonging to two Andean families (Asteraceae and Caprifoliaceae) of Cayambe Coca National Park from Ecuador. Some of the parameters studied are size, weight, color, shape and texture. These results allow us to know the seeds propagation processes and are a tool for the taxonomic differentiation of species. In addition, these results will be a baseline for the establishment of a seed bank for barcoded plant species from high-altitude natural systems (the HANS-BANK) that acts as a reservoir for germination experiments and preservation of genetic diversity.

Germination processes studies will continue with 30 key species to evaluate biological seed dynamics (e.g. time, temperature and variability of germination) and their success potential for practical reforestation and restoration programs.
