Untangling the phylogenetic relationships of Bomarea (Alstroemeriaceae) .

Bomarea Mirb. (Alstroemeriaceae; Liliales) are tropical geophytes distributed across Central and South America with a range extending from Central Mexico in the north to northern Chile and Argentina in the south. Of Bomarea’s roughly 120 species, most occur in the central Andes of Bolivia, Peru, and Ecuador, and previous work has suggested that Bomarea diversified rapidly and recently, corresponding with the uplift of the Andes. Bomarea edulis, the most widely distributed species, is found across the entire range of the genus. Bomarea edulis is also the only species that occurs in the Caribbean and in the Atlantic Coastal Forest and other regions of Brazil. To untangle the potential drivers of diversification and biogeographic history in Bomarea, we used target enrichment to sequence 405 nuclear loci of 174 accessions of 124 species, including 16 outgroup species from across Alstroemeriaceae. We included 43 individuals of B. edulis from across its range to assess species monophyly and identify infraspecific phylogeographic patterns. We compare phylogenetic relationships within Bomarea to previously proposed subgenera based on morphology and discuss the implications of our findings for understanding Andean plant radiations.
