Abstract Detail

Chromosome and Karyotype Evolution in Plants

Wefferling, Keir [1].

Cytogeography of the Western North American goldback and silverback ferns, Pentagramma, Pteridaceae.

A cytogeographical study of Pentagramma was undertaken with three main goals: to determine what ploidy levels are present in the genus; where the various cytotypes are distributed geographically; and whether the different cytotypes occupy different bioclimatic niches. We found that diploids and tetraploids are common and widespread, triploids are rare and scattered; hexaploids, as previously reported, were not found. Diploids and tetraploids show different geographic ranges and occupy narrower or wider niche breadth depending on the taxon compared.
