Chromosome and Karyotype Evolution in Plants

Evolutionary Dynamics of Genome Size in a Radiation of Woody Plants.

Genome size and chromosome number vary widely across plants, but the causes and consequences of this variation are not fully understood. Here we analyze trends in genome size and chromosome number evolution across Viburnum (Adoxaceae) to better understand patterns of variation across the clade. We also investigate potential relationships between genome size and leaf anatomical and functional traits that were shown to be associated with genome size at broader phylogenetic scales. Across Viburnum, we find multiple polyploidy events, changes in base chromosome number, and a strong correlation between chromosome number and genome size. We also find a lack of evidence for most relationships between genome size and functional or morphological traits, suggesting genome size variation does not appear to be a strong driver of eco-physiological evolution in Viburnum.
