The Contribution of Regional Flora Projects to the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation Utteridge, Timothy [1]. The richest tropical island: floristic progress in New Guinea. The island of New Guinea is the world’s largest tropical island, and one of the least explored regions and largest remaining tropical wilderness areas on the planet. There are many gaps in our knowledge of the island's biodiversity as there is no complete Flora, but a recent checklist has placed the number of species at 13,634 species (68% endemic), making New Guinea the most floristically diverse island in the world, with an additional c. 3,000–4,000 species likely to be added to this total. The island is divided politically between Indonesia and Papua New Guinea, both falling within the remit of the regional Flora Malesiana project (yet to be finished). The current state of floristic progress for the island will be presented through an overview of ongoing projects, key plant groups and their diversity, habitats and threats, knowledge gaps and conservation and science need in the botanical community serving New Guinea.
