Modeling the processes that mediate speciation and extinction rates across plants

Testing for diversification rate heterogeneity and their correlates: application to the diversification of microscopic plant and fungal groups.

Understanding how speciation and extinction rates vary through time and across lineages, as well as the intrinsic (e.g. species traits) and extrinsic (e.g. abiotic and biotic) factors driving these variations, is key to understanding patterns of diversity in plants and the organisms that interact with them. I will present diversification models developed in my research group focused on estimating speciation and extinction rates and testing their associations with past environmental changes and species traits. Next, I will illustrate the application of these models to the study of diversification in two empirical systems: marine diatoms, and the AMF (Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi) plant symbionts. These applications will illustrate the challenges of applying diversification methods in microscopic plants and fungal groups, as well as new opportunities provided by NGS data. They will also illustrate the need to develop diversification models that better account for species ecologies when testing the effect of past environmental variations on diversification rates.
