Floristics & Taxonomy Faust, Harpo [1], Legler, Ben [2], Tank, David [3]. The Director’s Cut: Behind the scenes of a comprehensive vascular flora in the mountains of northern Idaho. The Idaho Selkirks are a dynamic mountain range in the Northern Rocky Mountains that lie at the confluence of the Pacific coast, boreal north, Columbia Basin, and Rocky Mountain floristic regions. Despite notable collection effort over the last century in the northern Idaho Panhandle, a comprehensive checklist for the Selkirks did not exist prior to this project, and previous collecting efforts were uneven, creating significant gaps in coverage and incomplete documentation of the area. Between 2019 and 2020, 4,153 plant specimens were collected in the Selkirk Mountains of Idaho, as the basis of a comprehensive checklist of the vascular flora for the Idaho portion of the range. Included in this inventory was a synthesis of thousands of historical specimens from multiple herbaria. Field work resulted in five additions to the flora of Idaho and 228 county collection records were documented, and the careful review of historical collections revealed an additional state record for Idaho. Throughout the project, multiple species that were only represented by one or a few collections were relocated, and others that had been collected previously were not. This talk will focus on the process and results of combining targeted fieldwork with historical collections data to synthesize the flora of a mountain range that was poorly documented yet simultaneously boasts a rich history of botanical exploration.
