Non-target fungicidal effects in the corn (Zea mays) and soybean (Glycine max) microbiome.

There is a desire to study community dynamics under fungicide pressure so that fungicides are used in the most sustainable way possible. Here we examine non-target effects of foliar fungicide applications on fungal and bacterial communities of corn and soybean in both conventional and no-till management systems. Corn and soybean were grown within the Kellogg Biological Research (KBS) Long-Term Ecological Research experiment in Michigan. In 2017, pyraclostrobin (Headline ®) was sprayed at a recommended commercial rate of 877 ml/ha onto corn leaves at the mid-vegetative (V7) growth stage. Corn leaves and roots were collected one day before, nine days after, or thirty-five days after fungicide application. In 2018, a combination of trifloxystrobin and prothioconazole (Delaro ®) were sprayed at a recommended commercial rate of 731 ml/ha onto soybean leaves at the reproductive (R3) growth stage. Soybean leaves and roots were collected one day before, one week, or one month after fungicide application. In both crops fungal and bacterial community composition changed over time. Fungicides had a small but significant effect on the phyllosphere fungal composition at least nine days post fungicide application in corn and up to 30 days in soybean. Intriguingly, basidiomycete yeasts residing in/on the foliage were the fungal guild most affected by the fungicide applications in both crops, and fungal communities in the no-till management were more resilient to fungicide disturbance. The affected yeasts co-occurred with bacteria in the Sphingomonas, Methylobacterium and Hymenobacter. Indirect effects on the plant microbiome mediated through cooccurring leaf bacteria are currently being investigated.
