Mycology Ebinghaus, Malte [1], Santos, Maria D.M. [2], Tonelli-Silveira, Guilherme S.S. [3], DIANESE, JOSE CARMINE [4]. A taxonomic novelty within family Raveneliaceae. Ravenelia cenostigmatidis Berndt & F.O. Freire was described in year 2000, infecting Cenostigma gardnerianum, collected in the Brazilian Notheastern State of Piaui. This species exhibits odd characteristics that make it morphologically absolutely unique within the genus Ravenelia. It is mainly characterized by very strong, curved, and abundant peripheral paraphyses giving to the uredinia a medusiform appearance, with urediniospores also showing very typical morphology of its two-layered wall, as its outer coat is ornated by longitudinal, spiral, prominent notched ridges that starts at spore base, fading at the top. Furthermore, the telial morph is also abundantly paraphysate, beginning also with a medusiform look, and as it matures opens up revealing a group of spore heads that also exhibit unique shape. Its superficial ornamentations mimic spikes of the SARS-2 virus, and are present mostly on the peripheral cells. However, our molecular phylogenetic analyses based on partial nuc rDNA large subunit (28S), SSU, and the cytochrome c-oxidase subunit 3 (CO3) of the mitochondrial DNA, clearly positioned R. cenostigmatidis within family Raveneliaceae, but in a new sister-genus of Ravenelia, that will soon be published following the requirements of the our International Code of Nomenclature.
