The Legume Data Portal, a community effort to facilitate sharing and collaboration in Leguminosae.

Legumes are economically and ecologically one of the most important families of flowering plants. With more than 19 500 species and nearly 800 genera distributed throughout the globe and occurring in all biomes, research on legumes relies on international collaborations, supported by efficient sharing of openly accessible data. The Legume Phylogeny Working Group (LPWG), established in 2010 as an informal research group, published a paper in 2019 expressing the need for a Web portal to facilitate access to scientifically validated data about the family. One year later, the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) began a pilot program to develop portals that give access to occurrence and other data hosted on GBIF for particular communities, such as countries, regions and taxonomic groups. The LPWG was selected as one of the pilot projects and we have since been working with the GBIF informatics team to establish the Legume Data Portal. Through this portal, and as part of ongoing research on legumes, we will provide access to: GBIF occurrence data; programming tools and scripts for cleaning occurrence data; an up-to-date checklist of species and their synonymy, which has been verified by the legume community; taxonomic, morphological and ecological information about the family; and eventually images, trait, genomic and phylogenetic data. Importantly, the framework allows us to help curate global data resources and to work together to report data quality issues to the data providers, leading to enhanced quality data for future research. The ultimate goal of the Legume Data Portal is to encourage international collaboration and exchange amongst scientists and students, and to provide a platform to share our data and expertise on the systematics and evolution of the Leguminosae with a broad community of users.
