Phylogenomics, genome evolution and pangenome in the genus Lentinula (Berk.) Pegler (Agaricales).

The genus Lentinula contains a handful of species of white rot Agaricales, including one of the most important mushroom crop in the world, L. Edodes. We summarize recent discoveries regarding evolution of the genus Lentinula (Agaricales) from an extensive comparative genomic study. Phylogenomics help resolve the species relationships within Lentinula. The genus has a transpacific geographical distribution, with at least three clearly defined species complexes in the Americas (L. raphanica, L. boryana and L. aciculospora) and several species in Asia and Oceania that are, for the most part, interfertile. Topology analyses support sisterhood of Asia-Oceania clades with L. aciculospora and point to a possible american origin of the genus. We also explore patterns of gene family evolution within the genus, which shows a considerable repertoire accesory genome with large differences between species complexes.  L. raphanica posseses a much larger accesory genome than the rest of the genus, and in particular than its sister lineage, L. Boryana. Meanwhile, the american Lentinula have important reductions in cold-shock gene families, likely as a consequence of their tropical and subtropical distributions.
