Speciation Mechanisms in Plants.

The generation of plant biodiversity has long fascinated botanists, yet the mechanisms that underly the establishment of new species remain elusive.   It is clear that both extrinsic (environmental) and intrinsic (genetic) factors can contribute to speciation by producing reproductive barriers that promote divergence between populations and species.   The identification of these factors, and the elucidation of their relative impact on the speciation process, is an active area of research. Speciation studies have been greatly accelerated with the application of genomic, candidate gene and phylogenetic approaches to assess the differentiation of closely related species and of populations that are actively diverging. This Symposium will feature recent discoveries of the extrinsic and intrinsic factors that promote the reproductive isolation of populations, using a broad range of plant species and experimental approaches. The extrinsic factors to be discussed include local adaptation, plant-pollinator interactions, and biogeography.   Intrinsic factors that will be discussed include mating system transitions, pollen-pistil interactions and hybrid incompatibilities. Together, the presentations in this Symposium will provide a fresh perspective on the evolutionary processes that impact plant speciation.
