Genetic evidence of natural hybridization between Stenomesson aurantiacum and Phaedranassa dubia (Amaryllidaceae).

Natural hybridization is considered a common event in plants, due to incomplete reproductive isolation and high reproduction chances. Some 30% to 70% of all plants have gone through hybridization processes in their phylogenetic history. This process is not uncommon and has caused speciation in different groups of plants. However, there are few reports of cross-generic hybridization. In this study, we report hybridization between Stenomesson aurantiacum and Phaedranassa dubia (Amaryllidaceae) in Ecuador. Genetic and statistical analysis with seeds suggest hybridization and gene flow between these two species with a clustering in the genetic structure greater than 50% for each crossing. However, there is still an uneven flow of genes that could respond to phenomena of asymmetric hybridization and gene introgression. This study provides new information on possible cases of inter-generic hybridization in the family Amaryllidaceae.
