PhyloCode 2020: Naming the Tree of Life Cellinese, Nico [1], Vaidya, Gaurav [2], Lapp, Hilmar [3]. Life in the digital world: a journey from RegNum to phyloreferences. In a world flooded by digital information, from genomics, remote sensing, and museum specimens (among many other fields), computational data integration is a crucial means towards the discovery and understanding of large-scale evolutionary and ecological patterns. However, we independently decorate phylogenies with names, often exercising our own discretion, which frequently leads to inconsistency, especially for taxonomically complex groups (e.g., which node to label with a specific name). Phylogenetic clade definitions provide an opportunity for unambiguously defining the semantics of a clade concept in terms of shared evolutionary ancestry, and these semantics allow locating clades on any phylogeny. Although as published clade definitions are not readable by machines, they can be transformed into phyloreferences, the equivalent of computable map coordinates but on the Tree of Life. This journey starts with RegNum, which is a registration name service and repository of clade definitions that is a core requirement of the PhyloCode. These clade definitions can then be digitized into a structured format with machine-understandable semantics, and as such they allow computers to store, compare, distribute and resolve semantically-rich clade names. Phyloreferences provide an approach where data integration can be reproduced with confidence across different phylogenetic hypotheses. Log in to add this item to your schedule
