Floristics & Taxonomy Grady, Ben [1], Corbin, Beth [2], Mansfield, Donald [3]. Revisiting some of the taxonomic tricksters within Eriogonum (Polygonaceae) from Idaho, Montana and Oregon. Categorizing species, validating historical taxonomy, and prioritizing conservation needs pose compounding challenges for certain plant groups. Some lineages of Eriogonum (Polygonaceae) are associated with confounding and conflicting nomenclatural histories. Within Eriogonum, the group loosely defined as the ‘capitate group’ in the subgenus Eucycla fits this description. In this analysis we focused on members of the ‘capitate group’ with ranges from central Idaho, north of the Snake River Plain, eastern Oregon and western Montana. This group includes three species based on the most recent Flora of North America treatment, but has included as many as eight recognized taxa within this region. We examined a collection of morphological features, measured from a total of 139 herbarium specimens from across the geographic range of each of the putative species or varieties. Multivariate analyses of a suite of morphological characters have proved useful for differentiating some previously recognized species currently subsumed into E. crosbyae or E. mancum (E. capistratum var. capistratum, E. capistratum var. welshii, and E. capistratum var. muhlickii). Other previously recognized taxa do not appear distinct based on these morphological analyses (E. meledonum, E. verrucosum). Certain morphological features appear to be more informative in recognizing variation within this group of taxa. Comparing these morphometric results to a comprehensive genetic analysis is the next logical step in gaining a better understanding of this taxonomically tangled group of Eriogonum species.
