Hybrids and Hybridization Bhandari, Gauri Shankar [1], Park, Chong-Wook [1]. Molecular evidence for natural hybridization between Rumex crispus and R. obtusifolius (Polygonaceae) in Korea. Interspecific hybridization has been suggested to occur frequently in the genus Rumex (Polygonaceae). Several hypothesized combinations of parental species for hybrids based on their intermediate morphology have been suggested in this genus, but few of them have been phylogenetically tested. We analyzed nuclear and chloroplast sequence data of a putative natural hybrid between R. crispus and R. obtusifolius from Korea to confirm its hybrid status and to trace maternal parent. Analysis of nrDNA pgiC region revealed that R. crispus and R. obtusifolius have contributed to the nuclear genome of this putative hybrid, thus confirming its hybrid origin. Combined sequence data of five cpDNA (trnK/matK, ycf6-psbM, trnK-rps16, rbcL-accD, psbA-trnH) regions indicated that R. crispus is the maternal genome donor. This study reports the first molecular evidence for natural interspecific hybridization within Rumex in Korea. Log in to add this item to your schedule
