Overview on the wood anatomy of Sapindales, possible synapomorphies and character evolution.

The order Sapindales is composed of 6 main woody families: Anacardiaceae, Burseraceae, Meliaceae, Rutaceae, Sapindaceae, and Simaroubaceae. Members of this lineage are trees, shrubs, lianas, and herbs that are widespread throughout tropical and temperate regions. In this overview, we explore the wood anatomical features that define the order and each family. Additionally, we trace the character history of key anatomical features via ancestral state estimation methods. Sapindales as a whole have vessels with simple perforation plates, alternate non-vestured pits, fibers with minute pits, axial parenchyma either scanty paratracheal to vasicentric or aliform. The ancestral wood of the Sapindales is reconstructed as having marginal parenchyma delimiting the growth rings (lost in Anacardiaceae and Burseraceae), scanty paratracheal parenchyma, heterocellular 2-3 cell wide rays, and septate fibers (lost in Rutaceae and Simaroubaceae). Silica appeared in sparse members of Anacardiaceae, Burseraceae, Simaroubaceae, and Sapindaceae. Radial canals are present in Anacardiaceae and Burseraceae, and tyloses are exclusive to Anacardiaceae and a some Burseraceae. Traumatic canals are a common response to injury in Rutaceae, Meliceae and Simarouaceae. Storied structures and radially arranged vessels appeared to have evolved multiple times independently. This study is the first attempt to unravel the evolution of wood anatomical characters in this large angiosperm order using a robust phylogenetic tree and phylogenetic comparative methods.
