Hidden within the tropics: Tropicalia nom. prov., a new genus of bird’s nest fungi (Nidulariaceae) with the description o. Phylogenetic analyses have addressed the systematic positions of several Agaricales (Agaricomycetes, Basidiomycota) lineages, but taxa in the Nidulariaceae (bird's nest fungi) remains understudied. Of these, Mycocalia J.T. Palmer is the most poorly understood genus. Species in this genus have been identified as polyphyletic, but no further research has been conducted to revise the taxonomy and systematics of the genus. Here, we conduct a phylogenetic study using four informative loci (ITS, LSU, SSU, and TEF) of fungal species traditionally described under Mycocalia. In addition, we morphologically examined Mycocalia collections that were available. Our results suggest that two tropical Mycocalia species: M. aquaphila and M. reticulata are only distantly related to Mycocalia denudata (the type species of this genus). Accordingly, we propose the new genus, Tropicalia nom. prov. to accommodate this phylogenetically and morphologically unique bird's nest fungus lineage. Moreover, we describe a new species: Tropicalia siamensis nom. prov. from Satun (a southern province of Thailand). Lastly, we revise the taxonomy, provide a morphological comparison and a key to accepted species of Mycocalia and Tropicalia.
