Inferring the phylogeny of the aquatic angiosperm family Podostemaceae using 150 plastid genomes with an emphasis on Apinagia s.s. We present a phylogeny of the riverweed family (Podostemaceae) inferred using 150 terminals and 73 coding regions of the plastid genome. Podostemaceae is the largest strictly aquatic flowering plant family. Their distribution is cosmopolitan in the tropics, though a few species occur in temperate regions, including one species native to the eastern United States. Using a maximum likelihood approach, we analyzed newly collected plastid genome data to further resolve relationships in the family. An emphasis is placed on the currently non-monophyletic Apinagia, the largest, most morphologically complex, and taxonomically difficult genus of neotropical Podostemaceae, for which we are preparing a monograph. Resolution within the family is greatly improved compared to previous studies with most backbone relationships resolved with maximum support. Our results provide a strong basis for improving the classification of the family, which will directly aid conservation efforts. Results also have important implications for understanding morphological evolution and the biogeographic history of the family. Log in to add this item to your schedule
