Systematics Becklund, Leigh [1], Ayers, Tina [2]. The elevation of the narrow-endemic Errazurizia rotundata to a new monotypic genus and its relationship to Errazurizia (Fabaceae). The legume genus Errazurizia was historically comprised of four species of desert shrubs. Species included the narrow endemics E. multifoliolata (type species) of sub-Atacama Chile, E. rotundata of northern Arizona, and E. benthamii of Baja California Sur, Mexico; and the more widespread E. megacarpa of Sonora and Baja California, Mexico. Previous studies recovered a polyphyletic E. rotundata, and E. multifoliolata had not been included in molecular studies, leaving the group in taxonomic ambiguity. We clarified the phylogenetic relationships of Errazurizia and six closely related genera using the chloroplast (cpDNA) genome and the nuclear ribosomal DNA (nrDNA) cistron via next-generation sequencing and genome skimming. The resulting maximum likelihood and Bayesian analyses found E. multifoliolata, E. megacarpa, and E. benthamii are a monophyletic group and E. rotundata is sister to the monotypic genus Parryella. Morphological evidence from gland and pollen surface characteristics support the relationship between E. rotundata and Parryella. While cpDNA data support Amorpha as sister to the E. rotundata and Parryella clade, nrDNA cistron data support the inclusion of the E. rotundata and Parryella clade within Amorpha. Vegetative, glandular, inflorescence, floral, and fruit characteristics, in addition to molecular data, support the elevation of E. rotundata to its own monotypic genus. The new genus resolves the ambiguous classification of the rare endemic that is known only from four populations and lends support for continued conservation. Log in to add this item to your schedule
