Revisiting Polystichum (Dryopteridaceae) using the GoFlag 451 probe set: problems and prospects in the tropical American clades.

Polystichum (Dryopteridaceae) is one of the most species-rich fern genera, with an estimated 400 species distributed worldwide. After Eastern Asia, tropical America is the next most diverse region in the world, with ca. 80 species including numerous allopolyploids and narrow endemics. Previous molecular studies resolved the tropical American species as a monophyletic group which can be further divided into three geographically separated clades: an Andean clade, a Mayan clade (spanning southern Mexico to Panama), and an Antillean clade (Caribbean islands of the Greater and Lesser Antilles). Of these three clades, the Antillean group is the most diverse and the least understood, with only four of the 29 species endemic to the islands included in a molecular phylogeny to date. Utilizing the target enrichment probe set for flagellate plants, GoFlag 451, we present a nuclear phylogeny of tropical American Polystichum and discuss future prospects and remaining problems for the group including incongruences with previous chloroplast phylogenies and implications for disentangling reticulate evolution. We also discuss biogeographical and taxonomic implications for the Antillean clade based on the results of our analysis, which represents the most comprehensive sampling of the Antillean taxa to date.
