NOT your average specimen! Puppo, Pamela [1], Thompson, Lori [2]. Advocating the value of Herbarium collections beyond botanical collections: partnering with archivists to rediscover the historical value of Marshall University Herbarium. Marshall University Herbarium (MUHW) is the second largest herbarium in the state of West Virginia with ca. 50,000 specimens. During Spring 2021, we partnered with the Special Collections Department to process part of the manuscript collection present in the herbarium. This includes letters about the foundation of MUHW in 1930 by Frank A. Gilbert, an herbarium book from 1896 containing vascular plants mostly collected in Kentucky, and an herbarium book of algae from 1926 made by a resident of Huntington, West Virginia. Nine graduate students from the “Archives and Special Collections” Course worked for the whole semester with this collection and presented their findings to library staff, faculty from different colleges, and university administrators. In this talk, I present part of their findings and show how this partnership with archivists helped bring a new awareness of the historical value of the Herbarium collection to staff, stakeholders, and the Marshall University community in general.
