Biogeography Sun, Kailin [1]. The “Journey to the West”: the spread of Myricaria from China to Europe. Myricaria (family Tamaricaceae) has a wide distribution across Eurasia. Members of this genus are both indicator and keystone species of riparian habitats in montane regions, and are associated with many animal species. Habitat loss due to dam building and river straightening is a concern across the range of the genus, so Myricaria has been the focus of many conservation projects. Previous phylogeographic studies have shown that the centre of diversity of Myricaria is the Himalayas, and that from there the genus had spread east to China. However, there are currently no phylogenetic studies focussing on Myricaria to the west of China, so it is not known how the genus spread to Europe. Despite the ecological importance of Myricaria, there is also much confusion surrounding the taxonomic descriptions of certain species. The objective of my Master Project is to help ascertain the species delimitations within Myricaria, and to understand its biogeographic history west of the Himalayas. I am currently working on DNA extraction, PCR and sequencing of three gene regions (ITS, psbA-trnH, and rpL16) from herbarium specimens and fresh samples. Molecular phylogenies will be constructed from this data and data from previous studies. The DNA data sequenced in this study will be made available on GenBank for the benefit of future research.
