Systematics ROY, TILOTTAMA [1]. A fresh look at the evolutionary diversification of the "Rosinweeds" (Genus: Silphium; Family:Asteracaeae). The Asteraceae family is a widespread flowering plant family that is distributed and spread throughout the world. The genus Silphium is native to the Eastern United States and small parts of Canada, with a wide variety of species native to the Midwestern United States. There are four species native to Missouri – S. integrifolium, S. perfoliatum, S. terebinthinaceum, and S. laciniatum. The species Silphium perfoliatum has properties that make it an eligible source for future biofuels, spurring our phylogenetic research of the genus. The first goal of this study was to investigate the evolutionary relationships among members of this group through the analysis of nucleotide sequence data from the Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS) and External Transcribed Spacer (ETS) regions of nuclear ribosomal DNA (nrDNA), as well as the chloroplast loci rbcL and trnL, and a Bayesian method of tree building. Another goal was to focus on the placement of the Missouri native species in the phylogenetic trees obtained from our analyses. We also looked at the timing of diversification for this group in temperate North America. Log in to add this item to your schedule
