Conservation Biology De Groot, Sarah [1]. Using Geographic Information Systems in Field Botany and Plant Conservation. Beyond just making maps, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have become an integral part of many field botany and plant conservation projects. Navigation to field sites and tracking whose land we are on is enabled with mobile GIS. We also map and record detailed site information for seed collections, rare plants, invasive weeds, or vegetation types in the field. Desktop GIS allows us to answer practical workflow and conservation questions via spatial queries, habitat modeling, spatial data analysis, and temporal analysis. Web GIS has enabled us to coordinate larger projects with dozens of collaborators, both internal and external to our organization, and share data in near real-time. For many projects, we use a combination of these applications. This presentation will not discuss specific methods, but will summarize some of the conservation questions answered and field projects improved with GIS. Log in to add this item to your schedule
