Ecology Bulu, Yetunde [1], Oladoja, N. Abiola [2]. Delving into the Variables that Influence the Pollution Remediation Potentials of Invasive Macrophytes. Phytoremediation has emerged as an eco-friendly, aesthetic, and cost-effective alternative to the physical and chemical methods in pollutant attenuation in environmental media. Of all the phytoremediation techniques, phytofilteration has been identified as the only method for the removal of different kinds of pollutants like heavy metals and a broad range of organic compounds from water and wastewater. Floating invasive macrophytes such as Eichonnia crassipes and Pistia stratiotes have been documented as threat to the ecosystems because of their ability to outcompete native vegetation and reduce distinctiveness of the biological communities at various scales due to their prolific proliferation, high biomass and nutrient uptake capability. These ability however have positioned them as an ideal phytoremediating species in polluted water and wastewater. In this review, an overview of the process of phytofilteration in aquatic system was explored in order to leverage on the potentials of invasive macrophytes for use as phytoremediators in creating a balanced ecological system. Moreover, this review focus on the identification of variables that can be optimized to enhance the phytoremediation potentials of the different macrophytes documented.
