Education and Outreach Meindl, George [1]. Diversifying educational opportunities in Botany. Creating inclusive, impactful educational experiences for our students requires broadening traditional approaches to undergraduate education. In this talk, I will outline several ways in which we can diversify learning opportunities for our students through varied pedagogical strategies, including independent study, Course-based Undergraduate Research Experiences (CUREs), and community-engaged learning. I will emphasize, in particular, my efforts implementing CUREs, in which whole classes of students address a research question or problem with unknown outcomes or solutions. In addition to fostering a strong foundational knowledge, CUREs provide experiential opportunities for students to develop skills in conducting research, communicating about science, and collaborating with other scientists. Recent data collected by my students addresses the phytoremediation potential of several native aquatic plants in Cu-polluted environments. By diversifying the ways in which students are allowed to learn and apply their knowledge, we can create better trained and more diverse students.
