Manihot at Flora of Ceará, Northeast Brazil: floristic survey and taxonomic insights. The State of Ceará is located in the setentrional portion of the Brazilian Northeast with 70% of its area in a geoenvironmental formation called "Sertaneja depression" under a semiarid climate. In the context of the “Flora of Ceará: knowing to conserve” project, several floristic-taxonomic studies have been developed and reveal the great diversity and richness of diverse plant groups in the flora of that state. Among these groups, Manihot Mill. stands out for including one of the plant species with the greatest cultural and economic relevance for Ceará, Cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz). The taxa of the genus, about 150, are distributed throughout the Neotropical region, being cultivated in other regions of the world. In Brazil, there are 116 species that can be recognized by the shrub to subshrub habit, presence of latex and cyanogenic glycosides; persistent stipules, simple or lobed leaves; cyme with pistillate and staminate flowers, and capsule fruits. With that, we aim to inventory and analyze data related to the distribution and taxonomy of the species of Manihot occurring in the state of Ceará. In this sense, we perform a survey for Manihot species by consulting specialized literature and reference websites, analysis of protologues, nomenclatural types and detailed morphological analysis of about 300 herborized specimens. In the Brazilian Flora 2020, five species of Manihot were confirmed in the State of Ceará (Manihot baccata Allem, M. caerulescens Pohl, M. carthagenensis (Jaq.) Müll.Arg., M. esculenta Crantz and Manihot fortalezensis Nassar, Ribeiro, Bomfim et Gomes). However, analysis of herbarium specimens allowed the identification of new records for the region, such as Manihot decurrens M. Mend. & M. Martins, Manihot dichotoma Ule and Manihot tripartita (Spreng.) Müll.Arg. It´s important to emphasize that studies are being conducted to confirm the taxonomic identity of Manihot fortalezensis, which presents characters often overlapping with M. glaziovii. Regarding the distribution of the genus in the state, the majority of its registration are concentrated in the Caatinga area, which represents 70% of Ceará´s territory.
