Recent Topics Posters Crum, Alexandra [1], Yang, Ya [2]. Phylogenetic Distribution of Traditional Medicinal Use in Caryophyllales. The order Caryophyllales is notable for including several important medicinal plants, as well as its unique production of tyrosine (Tyr)-derived betalain pigments originating in the core clade. Betalains are mutually exclusive with the widespread phenylalanine (Phe)-derived anthocyanin pigments. The switch from anthocyanin to betalain is symptomatic of a wider diversification of Tyr-enriched specialized metabolism in the group, potentially at the expense of Phe-derived metabolites, including anthocyanin. Specialized metabolites are the underlying cause of a plant’s potential medicinal effect, so we would expect closely related plants with similar metabolites to have similar uses in traditional medicine. Caryophyllales, with its importance in traditional medicine and expected difference in specialized metabolites between lineages, is an an ideal clade to explore the relationship between specialized metabolism, evolution, and traditional medicine. Here we present preliminary results of a literature review of medicinal use in Caryophyllales. Uses were mapped onto a phylogeny and tested for phylogenetic clustering at each node.
