Population structure within Lentinula edodes in Asia inferred from 71 whole genome sequences. Lentinula is a genus of white rot wood decay fungi found on hardwood trees (especially Fagaceae) across Asia, Oceania, and in tropical and subtropical regions of North and South America. This genus contains at least six morpho-species, including the most widely cultivated mushroom worldwide, shiitake (Lentinula edodes). Currently, L. edodes represents two well-supported clades resolved by ITS phylogenies which form sister groups in concatenated ITS tef1-a trees. One clade, "Group I", contains many wild-collected L. edodes as well as all tested cultivars. The second group, "Group V", is known thus far to contain only wild isolates. Recent sequencing efforts carried out by the Joint Genome Institute, Huazhong Agricultural University, and others have produced a large dataset of genomes spanning the entire genus. These genomes have allowed for population and phylogenomic analyses utilizing SNP and orthogroup datasets throughout Lentinula. Two groups are reliably identified within the monophyletic L. edodes clade, largely overlapping with, but not equivalent to those identified with ITS. In this talk I will discuss the population structure within the L. edodes clade and the relationships and dynamics present between its populations reflecting complex histories of interbreeding and selection.
