Population Genetics/Genomics Krakowiak, Alaina [1]. Conservation Genetics and Phylogeography of Fremont’s Leather Flower (Clematis fremontii). Fremont’s leather flower (Clematis fremontii) is a non-vining, perennial species with a unique, disjunct distribution. It occurs in small, isolated populations in a variety of grassland habitats from Nebraska to Georgia and is considered rare and endangered in 5 of the 6 states in which it occurs. In spite of this, it receives little protection, especially in the Southeast. This study utilizes ddRAD sequencing to assess genetic differentiation and quantify genetic diversity in populations across the species’ range. This information will be useful for future management and conservation decisions, such as population establishment, augmentation, or protection of extant populations. All other species in Clematis section Viorna subsection Integrifoliae strictly occur in the eastern United States, so this study also aims to infer the phylogeographic history of C. fremontii–a midwestern and eastern species.
