Macrofungi Of The Lemhi Range, Idaho – Documenting Diversity In An Underexplored Region of North America. Macrofungi play essential ecological roles across nearly all terrestrial habitats, yet significant gaps continue to exist in our knowledge of the diversity, distribution, and ecology of North American macrofungi. Documenting and preserving these organisms in fungaria is vital to understanding their biology. This study represents the first official survey of the diversity of macrofungi occurring in the Lemhi Range of Idaho, a poorly documented and ecologically unique region. Habitats varied from montane sagebrush steppe to subalpine forests of whitebark pine (Pinus albicaulis). A two-week field survey was conducted resulting in a collection of fifty-eight specimens representing approximately fifty-six species of Ascomycetes and Basidiomycetes. These collections, along with a number of additional Idaho fungarium specimens, were sequenced for the nrITS barcode for fungi using both high-throughput and Sanger methods. This data is used to identify operational taxonomic units from which further morphological study is used to confirm species-level identification. All specimens collected for this study are vouchered in the Sam Mitchel Herbarium of Fungi at Denver Botanic Gardens. The results of this Stuntz Memorial Foundation supported study contribute towards furthering our understanding of diversity, distributions, and the conservation of macrofungi in Idaho and North America.
